A reception was hosted by Islamic University of Technology (IUT) on 25 September 2016 on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) of which IUT is a subsidiary organ. The reception was attended – among others, by the heads and representatives of diplomatic mission of the member states of the OIC – which was held in a city hotel. Welcoming the invitees, Prof. Dr. Munaz Ahmed Noor, Vice-Chancellor, IUT, highlighted the historical background of establishing the OIC. He said after the United Nations, the OIC is now the second largest intergovernmental organization adding that the organisation started its solemn journey with 30 member states which has grown into 57 spread over three continents and other regions of the world.
It may be mentioned that the Organisation is committed to uphold the values of Islamic solidarity, joint Islamic action, international peace & justice, inter-faith harmony, resolution of disputes, promotion of human rights, tolerance and moderation in the member states.
Representing over 1.5 billion Muslims, the OIC is now poised to unify the Ummah through settlement of conflicts and disputes involving its member states. Highlighting the values and spirits of Islam, the OIC is engaged itself in the relentless efforts to remove misperceptions and misunderstandings about the philosophy and practices of Islam and thereby face the scourge of Islam phobia from the minds of the people of other faiths. The organisation is faced with new challenges in the 21st century, especially in the current decade, with the rise of violent extremism, terrorism, radicalism around the world. The role and importance of the OIC in the context of current geo-political situation has assumed a new proportion with the emerging global circumstances and the OIC is now poised to face this challenge with the concerted efforts of its member states and beyond.
