The universities in the country seem to have turned into factories for producing jobless manpower as the barren subjects taught there increase unemployment.
According to sources, with the hope for obtaining certificates from big universities students get admitted into many such subjects which are known as barren in the job market. In getting employment, the youths having degrees in Sanskrit, Pali and Urdu trail behind those who have passed in other subjects. When they submit applications for jobs arranging money for pay orders and bank drafts, most of the government and private establishments do not issue interview cards to them.
The universities failed to supply in adequate number that type of workers who get preference in the ever growing private sector. That is why, the employers in these sectors appoint large number of foreign workers. A grave state of unemployment of the youths having higher education is reflected in the statistics presented at home and abroad. Most of these youths are holders of the degrees on the useless subjects introduced by the universities.
FBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmed said, “The boy/girl who secures best results in Sanskrit, Pali, Urdu or Persian language from a good university, will not be able to operate a machine if appointed in any factory under the private sector. The banks will not be able to give any major responsibility to him/her. The important matters of trade and commerce are also unknown to him/her. So, such education is unnecessary in our country.” Matlub recommended for recasting the education system of Bangladesh in accordance with the demand of the private sector.
Executive director of Policy Research Institute (PRI) Ahsan H Mansur stressed, “Steps should be taken to familarise the university students with the working environment of the private sector. The government and private entrepreneurs and university authorities also can take initiative to involve the students in technical education along with general education. If that is done, the students will become skilled hands in the real sense.”
